Wow. What an ending.

A lot happened in the last 40 pages or so (and the first couple hundred, too) of Oakville resident Hannah Mary McKinnon’s Her Secret Son ($19.99, HarperCollins Canada). Without saying anything, there was parts I liked and parts that I didn’t and many parts that made me wonder what I would have done in similar situations. I know one thing I would not have done, but I can’t tell you what that is.

Josh is a man who has had a rough life, but turned it around after meeting Grace, the love of his life, and her little boy, Logan. Josh always wanted to adopt Logan as his own, but Grace bushed it off as an unnecessary formality. But when Grace dies in a freak accident and Josh tries to become Logan’s legal guardian, he has trouble with the paperwork associated with his son’s birth.

Josh “soon finds that there are many dark secrets to uncover, and that the truth about where Logan came from is a much more sinister then he could have ever imagined.”

Her Secret Son was a super fast read that kept me guessing and wondering. Josh is an amazing character who tries to do what is right morally and what is right for his son.

There is lots to say that can’t be said without wrecking the suspense in the book. So I won’t. But I will say it is certainly worth the read and the internal debate that comes with it.

Her Secret Son comes out May 28. I will be doing a Q&A with McKinnon in June. Keep an eye out.
