Star Scouts by Mike Lawrence ($20.99, Raincoast Books, First Second) was a fun graphic novel about Avani, the new kid in town, whose father signs her up for the Flower Scouts, a group of girls who think Avani is weird particularly as she isn’t interested in makeovers and boys.

But everything changes when Avani is accidentally abducted by an alien named Mabel. Mabel is a scout, too, collecting alien specimens (like Avani) and trying out teleportation and jetpack racing. Avani might be weird, but she fits right in with the Star Scouts. Now if only she can survive Camp Andromeda, and keep her dad from discovering that she’s left planet, she’s in for the adventure of a lifetime.

I quite enjoyed the book, which had some pretty funny moments in it including when Avani meets Pam, an alien bully and a methane breather or, as Mabel calls her with obvious results – “a toot breather.” There is many a toot joke in this book.

The relationship between Avani and Mabel, as well as between all the girls in Mabel’s scout troop, shows you friends can come in all shapes and sizes – and from any part of the world.
